you like your Mark IV with or without Opera Windows? When the new Continental
Mark IV was introduced, the Opera Windows were an $81.84 option. Lincoln apparently
didn't want to rock the boat with a new feature that might not be accepted
by the public. After all, Cadillac had introduced this feature (they called
them Coach WIndows), on its newly restyled Eldorado in 1971, and it received
a cool reception. The Eldorado only increased sales by around 3,000 units
over its four year old 1970 body style. Of course, all of GM was shut down
due to a UAW strike for about two and a half months, and that probably contributed
considerably to the dismal sales for 1971. As it turned out, the Opera Windows
were very popular. So popular that it is now difficult to find any Mark IV
without them! The windows were made standard for 1973, and became a Mark trademark
until 1983. In addition to the asthetics, the windows also served a very practical
purpose in that they reduced the blind spot in the C-pillar area of the roof.
In 1972, the Mark stood alone in a world where individuality had all but disappeared.

17:1 ratio The Most Beautiful Automobile in America After 1972 sales setting
records, few changes were made for the 1973s. Continuing at an unprecedented
pace, the Mark IV racked up another sales record for 1973, leaving Cadillac's
Eldorado behind. Automotive writer Jim Brokaw, in a test report for Motor
Trend observed that the car was so quiet that he could hear himself breathe.
Lincoln had finally put Cadillac in second place in the personal luxury car
market, a trend that would continue into the 1974 model year. The beautiful
front end of the Mark suffered a little in 1973, due to government regulations
requiring front bumpers to be able to withstand an impact of up to 5 mph into
a flat, vertical fixed barrier without preventing normal operation of the
car's latching, fuel, cooling and exhaust systems or of the propulsion, suspension,
steering and braking systems. The rear bumper had to meet the same requirements,
at up to 2.5 mph. The new front bumper shortened the appearance of the grille,
but most didn't seem to mind. The rear of the car remained the same as in
1972, but a new rear bumper guard was made available as an option, and most
ordered it, if only to ensure those behind knew they were in a new model,
and not last year's. The oval opera window that Lincoln seemed a little unsure
of the previous year, was now standard. And so popular, that aftermarket kits
were available to install oval opera windows on just about any car with a
large enough roof sail panel to cut into. Soon, LTDs, Coupe deVille's, Chevrolets,
even Thunderbirds and Lincoln Coupe's would sport the opera window. Nothing
else on the road, except Ford's Thunderbird, looked like the Mark. And the
Thunderbird, which shared many parts with the Mark, lacked the hidden headlamps,
rear deck spare tire design, and classic grille. More than a few Thunderbird
owners had their Birds modified with the Mark grille, but this was not done
by the factory. So similar were the cars, reports of Continental Mark IV instrument
panel inserts being installed in T-Birds, and vice versa, were rumored. All
of this really had little effect on the Mark. As Lincoln said in its 1973
sales brochure, "The 1973 Continental Mark IV. Quite simply, the most beautiful
automobile in America." ============ 1974 Continental Mark IV TOTAL PRODUCTION:
57,316 $10,194.00 The Cadillac, The Government, and The Gas In researching
the Continental Mark IV's world for 1974, three things summed it up: The Cadillac,
The Government, and The Gas. The Cadillac once again took the back seat to
Lincoln in the top prestige department. In spite of Cadillac offering the
Eldorado in two body styles (coupe and convertible), the Mark IV was by far
the more popular choice. Lincoln suggested that the Mark IV had become a legend
in its own time. Few would argue. And Cadillac meanwhile was busy at the drawing
board reworking its 1971 body to give it a more sporting appearance. If the
luxury car buyers wanted a sportier look, with open wheel wells, and less
detailing, then they would have it. But not until 1975. For 1974, the Eldorado
looked somewhat heavy when compared to the Mark. The rear fender skirts didn't
help, and neither did the massive front and rear bumper systems. The Government.
1974 was the year of the Seat Belt Interlock fiasco. If you wanted to start
a 1974 model, this would be the government-mandated way you would have to
do it: Sit down in the car. Then fasten your seat belt. Then turn the key.
Do not do these steps in a different order. Do not leave the seat belt fastened
all the time, as a logic circuit checks to make sure you are fastening the
belt each time you get into the car. Make sure front seat passengers do the
same steps, in the same order, or the car won't start. The Seat Belt Interlock
systems were disconnected by the thousands. Our fearless leaders in government
circles heard loud and clear the message being sent to them: NO! For 1975,
new cars would return to the reminder buzzer and warning lights they had used
in 1973. The gas prices were moving up the scale in 1974, and an oil shortage
would hasten their ascent. The luxury import Mercedes-Benz was making headway
in the American market, cars delivered to California had to meet stricter
emissions requirements, and more safety features were required. The rear bumper
now had to meet the 5 mph standard that the front bumpers met in 1973. Both
bumpers now had to endure a swinging pendulum test in addition to the flat
vertical fixed barrier test. The roof structure had to meet a federal standard
that required the roof to resist a flat block pressed against its forward
edge with a force one and a half times the curb weight of the vehicle. In
order to meet this requirement, thicker sheet metal, reinforced roof pillars
and structural members were added. This meant additional weight, which increased
fuel costs, and robbed performance. The cars destined for California delivery
would also need a belt-driven air pump installed that would inject air into
the engine exhaust. There were numerous valves and hoses, among other things,
placed under the hood to make this system work. They all contrbuted to a very
congested engine bay, and some lackluster performance and gas mileage figures.
Ultimately, all of these requirements led to higher base prices for new cars,
and coupled with the oil crisis and changing tastes, 1974 wasn't a great year
to buy a car. In spite of everything, the Continental Mark IV had become one
of the most desirable cars on the road, although perhaps not quite as striking
in appearance as its pre-bumper standards 1972 siblings. The ease of driving,
the comfortable ride, the penchant for total quiet inside the cabin. Hard
to beat. In 1974, the Continental Mark IV was among the great cars of the
world. The car that had become a legend in its own time. ============ 1 1971
